This has been one of my favorite classes at Trinity thus far, and I’m excited to see what’s to come since now I’m planning on minoring in Communication. For the last few days in this class, I would love to discuss Ms. Marvel more. I know it’s already planned for our next couple classes, but I really enjoyed her story. Maybe it’s because I’m a little self-involved and I love reading about characters who share a similar experience to me (minus the superpowers), but I’m interested in discussing the cultural and social difference between Kamala, her family, and her peers.
I especially enjoyed the Jessica Abel readings about podcasts. As someone who loves podcasts and has spent countless hours listening to and discussing podcasts, it’s was interesting to look behind the scenes into the ways that podcasts are produced. The comic really opened my eyes (ears?) to the sheer level of detail that some podcasts have to put into their production in order to tell a story, and made me more aware of the way that podcasts use audio to create pictures in the listener’s mind. I also really enjoyed all of the Klosterman readings. Perhaps I mostly enjoyed his works because of his cynicism and humor. Also, by pointing out the irony in the way that we enjoy entertainment or perceive love allowed me to laugh at myself.
My least favorite reading was probably White Space is Not Your Enemy – I did find the material informative and helpful for our projects, but I simply found it less interesting. The book as a whole is very useful and easily lays out ideas to help with print design, and I think that the chapter on type/font was especially helpful, since it showed just how type can make or break an advertisement, and more specifically, the use of different fonts for different purposes. I also think that the book can be used to dissect professional advertisements for the way the use “white space” or other elements spelled out in the book
Next semester I’m planning on continuing computer science, but I’m also going to try to minor in Communication. Because of how much I enjoyed this class, I think that I would really enjoy further classes in the Communication department. I also think that getting involved in KRTU would be fun, so I also hope to try my hand at that in the future. If I was in a future media interpretation class, I think discussing dream or surveillance would be most interesting.
